What Fall Reminds Me About Change

Every year, fall gives us a front-row seat to change.

The mornings get cooler. The light shifts. The days slowly grow shorter. Green leaves turn shades of red, orange and gold before eventually letting go altogether.

Fall has always been one of my favorite seasons. Maybe it’s because the change is so noticeable. You can see it happening all around you. And somehow, instead of resisting all of this change, we look forward to it.

We notice the first crisp morning. We get excited when we spot the first hint of color in the trees. We bring out the sweaters, pick the apples, make something warm for dinner and settle into a slightly slower rhythm.

Fall reminds me that change doesn’t always have to feel like something we’re losing.

Sometimes, change can simply mean making room for what comes next.

I think nature does this especially well. The trees don’t seem to rush the process. One leaf changes, then another. Flowers fade. Gardens begin to quiet. The sunlight looks a little different each evening.

There is no single moment when summer becomes fall. It happens gradually, almost quietly, until one day you look around and realize you’re standing in an entirely new season.

Life can feel that way too.

Not every change arrives with a big announcement. Sometimes it happens in small ways we barely notice at first. Our routines shift. Our priorities change. Our children grow. We discover new things we enjoy. We let go of something that once fit us and make room for something that fits us now.

Maybe that is one of the reasons I love fall so much.

It makes change beautiful enough to notice.

A tree filled with changing leaves doesn’t look like something that has failed to stay the same. It looks like something becoming what this season asks it to be.

There’s something comforting about that.

We don’t have to rush into the next version of ourselves. We don’t have to have everything figured out. And we certainly don’t have to flourish in every season.

Sometimes we can simply notice what is changing.

Maybe even appreciate some of it.

So this fall, I’m trying to pay attention—to the cooler mornings, the changing leaves, the earlier sunsets and all the little signs that one season is gently giving way to another.

And when change shows up in my own life, I hope I can remember what fall teaches us every year:

There can be beauty in becoming.

There can be gratitude for what was and hope for what comes next.

And sometimes, letting go is simply how we make room for a new season.

A moment to savor:
Take a walk this week and notice one small sign of the season changing. Then ask yourself: What is changing in my own life that I might look at a little differently?
