The Beauty of Anticipation
There is something wonderful about having something to look forward to.
A family gathering. A vacation. A celebration. The arrival of a new season. Even something as simple as dinner with a friend or a quiet weekend with no plans.
Sometimes, just thinking about what's ahead brings a little extra joy to our days. We imagine how it might feel, what we'll experience, and the memories we'll make. And often, that anticipation becomes part of the happiness itself.
But I've been thinking lately about how anticipation can work both ways.
I catch myself doing this, especially when there's a family gathering or a trip on the calendar. I start thinking about all the things I want to do, the people I'm excited to see, and how wonderful it will be to have everyone together. Before I know it, I'm counting down the days. And while I love having something to look forward to, I sometimes have to remind myself that there are plenty of good moments happening between now and then, too.
When Anticipation Becomes Worry
Not everything we anticipate brings excitement. Sometimes, looking ahead means facing uncertainty. A medical appointment. A difficult conversation. A big life change. Something we know is coming but can't quite predict.
It's easy to let our minds wander into the unknown, filling in the blanks with worry, doubt, and all the what-ifs.
I've certainly experienced this. And if there's one thing I've learned through some of life's more challenging seasons, it's that worrying about tomorrow can take away from the beauty of today.
We can't always control what's coming. But we can choose how much of our present we give away to the uncertainty.
When Excitement Takes Us Away From Today
Of course, anticipation can also be filled with wonderful things.
I love having something on the calendar that makes me smile just thinking about it. There's joy in planning, imagining, and counting down the days.
But even good anticipation can have a downside.
Sometimes we're so focused on what's next that we forget to enjoy what's right in front of us.
We look forward to Friday instead of appreciating Wednesday. We count down to a vacation while rushing through the weeks leading up to it. We wait for the holidays, the next milestone, or a new chapter, convinced that the best moments are still ahead.
And somewhere along the way, we miss the little things that make the days in between meaningful.
A beautiful morning. An unexpected laugh. A walk outside. A conversation that stays with us.
Finding Joy in Both
I'm learning that the beauty of anticipation isn't just about what we're looking forward to. It's about finding a balance between the hope of what's ahead and gratitude for what we have right now.
We can be excited about tomorrow without wishing away today.
We can acknowledge uncertainty without letting it steal our peace.
And we can look forward to a new season while still finding beauty in the one we're living.
After all, life isn't made up only of the big moments we circle on our calendars. It's also made up of all the ordinary days that lead us there.
So yes, make the plans. Look forward to the celebrations. Dream about what's next. Let anticipation bring a little joy into your life.
But don't forget to look around while you're waiting.
Because sometimes the moments we'll treasure most are the ones we never saw coming.
And there's so much beauty to savor right here, right now.
A Moment to Reflect
Is there something you're looking forward to—or perhaps worrying about—that's taking your attention away from today?
Take a moment to notice one good thing about the season you're in right now. Something you don't want to overlook while waiting for what's next.
Not every season is on the calendar. And every season holds something worth savoring.
